A CLOUD-BASED SMART PARKING SYSTEM BASED ON IOT TECHNOLOGIES

Abstract
The main aim of this work was to design and develop a smart parking system using microcontroller with sensors linked to the cloud via IOT technologies, which gives a solution to reduce traffic congestions and related concerns due to them. As a proof-of concept of this proposed method, a prototype was built with Arduino UNOs, Node MCUs, and Raspberry Pi 3, to demonstrate the proposed system. Additionally, an Android application using MIT app inventor 2, was developed for the users to facilitate them with bookings, editing, viewing status of car parks, etc. The application works on the smart slot suggestion mechanism and the system incorporates smart features such as RFID entry/exit, Number plate recognition (NPR) entry/exit and heavy vehicle rejection for entry. The performance of the system was evaluated by testing the robustness of RFID access and accuracy of NPR technique along with Application usability test. It was observed that the integrated approach of RFID and NPR was unique, and the Application was smarter than the current cloud systems. On average, the robustness of RFID sensor was 100%, while the NPR achieved an accuracy of 95% with detection time of under 7.5 seconds. The application usability feedback saw participants awarding 4.2 stars for ease of use and 90% preferred such an application.
