A Survey on Iris Recognition System

Abstract
Biometrics is the reliable, secure authentication tool for systems where controlled access is
provided by recognizing the individual either based on physiological or behavioral characteristics. The
physiological characteristics are Iris, fingerprint, face and hand geometry while behavioral characteristics include
voice, signature, and ECG. Iris recognition[1] is an imperative biometrics technique used for security purposes.
Iris is an accurate but vulnerable trait which is widely used in biometric system. It works on the principle of
extracting the important features of iris and have been proved to be efficient at individual recognition level with
high accuracy and nearly perfect matching. It is popular because of the unique nature of human iris. The iris
recognition system consists of image acquisition, segmentation, normalization, encoding and comparison. The
Iris feature of two eyes of same person are not similar making it more secured way of authentication as compared
to other Biometric recognition systems. This paper provides a review of various methods and algorithms used for
Iris recognition system.
