Assamese Language in Television: Crisis and Potentials

Abstract
Language plays an important role in changing the socio-economic situation of aparticular place. As a visual and
auditory medium, television indirectly publicizes, disseminatesand develops a language. Hence, it plays a significant
role in the development of a language. Italso connects millions of television watchers in a community. Further,
television plays a vitalrole in connecting disparate people who have different mother tongues in a multi lingual
countrylike India. The role of local television channels is even more significant for this particular role ofdeveloping
a particular language. At the present moment about Fifteen Assamese channels arebeing broadcasted. The local
channels operating in a vernacular medium have certain restrictionsas compared to the bigger channels that operate
globally. These also pose a setback that thechannels need to overcome. We need to pay close attention to the steps
undertaken by thesechannels to overcome these obstacles and their impact on the language. This article
entitled“Assamese Language in Television: Crisis and Potentials” aims to discuss these very factors thathave
remained untouched at the present time.
