The Effects of Perceived Stress and Burnout towards Accounting Students’ Academic Performance

Abstract
Stress and burnout are the reality of life that must be recognized and managed by everyone including students. In higher education, students may face some challenges due to academic factors such as deadlines and exam weeks which eventually can generate stress and burnout as well as may affect their academic performance. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the effects of perceived stress and burnout towards the academic performance of diploma accounting students. Data were collected via 411 responses of printed questionnaires. Perceived stress scale and maslach burnout inventory student survey (mbi – ss) were used to measure the perceived stress and burnout respectively. Results were analyzed in the form of descriptive analysis, reliability analysis and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that perceived stress has significant positive relationship while burnout has significant negative relationship towards students’ academic performance. The findings from this study were important to address the potential determinants and factors that may affect the students ‘academic performance so that early detection could be done in order to avoid negative effects and consequences associated with the situation faced by the students.
