Baby Jane Uytico, Mark N. Abadiano.

Abstract
As millennial generation flourishes in the workplace, bolder and more adventurous educators venture in teaching abroad. Young Filipino teachers are one of those who explore education in other cultures. This qualitative study conducted an in-depth exploration on the experiences of ten, millennial Filipino teachers who teach outside the Philippines utilizing the grounded theory. In-depth interviews with the respondents captured four emergent themes and a central category on the experiences of millennial Filipino educators. “Survival abroad” as the dominant category entailed four essential themes: (1) Goals; (2) Immersion; (3) Culture Shock; and (4) Attitude. These themes extracted from the stories of the participants can serve as a grounded construct to provide a better understanding of what it is like to survive while working in a foreign country. The grounded theory of goal-attitude-adaptation: keys to survival of teachers abroad presents a way of life in teaching abroad as it supports the principle that “Adaptation and survival entails goals and a set of positive attitude.” The theory can serve as a frame of reference upon which stakeholders in educational institutions in the country and abroad can have a better comprehension of the teachers’ motivations, challenges, and adapting strategies in thriving in a foreign land. In its entirety, this theory pinpoints to a story of millennial educators as they undertake the challenge of working abroad in order to accomplish personal growth and professional development.
