Abstract
This paper is an analysis of English word formation and phrase structure rules in movie titles. It studied complex
English word structures and phrase structures, including their grammatical functions, in data collected from English
movie titles released between 2015 and 2017 in Thailand (www.movie2free.com). The data include 376 English movie
titles. The structures of these movie titles are analyzed at both morphological (word) and syntactic (phrase and sentence)
levels on the basis of phrase structure rules in Government and Binding Theory. Three morphological formations
(compounding, affixation, and abbreviation) and four phrase structures (noun, verb, adjectival, and prepositional
phrase) are identified at the word and phrasal structure levels, respectively. As for the sentence structure level, a
negative-imperative sentence and a statement sentence were recognized. It is suggested that the knowledge of these
phrase structure rules may facilitate learning English as a second language.

Key words: English word formation, phrase structure rules, movie titles
