RECONSTRUCTION AND REINTERPRETATION OF THE CHARACTERS OF OEDIPUS IN GREEK MYTH AND KARNA IN INDIAN MYTH : A CRITICAL ANALYSIS ON THE BASIS OF SOPHOCLES’ PLAY ‘OEDIPUS REX’ AND CHANDRAPRASAD SAIKIA’S ASSAMESE NOVEL ‘MAHARATHI’

Abstract
Myths are based on the events, conditions and deeds govern by gods or superhuman beings. These events seem to be
historical but the myths are set in a time altogether different from historical time. It is a traditional story dealing with
the early history of man involving supernatural beings or events. Greek myths play the pivotal role in the occidental
mindset while the Indian myths pave the way for creative literature in different Indian languages. The character of
Oedipus in Greek mythology and the character of Karna in Indian mythology have drawn the attention of creative
writers in Greek and Indian literature. In that context, an attempt is made for undertaking an analytical study on
Greek myth and Indian myth in general and the characters of Oedipus and Karna in particular. In this write-up focus
is given on Sophocles’ ‘Oedipus Rex’, a Greek play as well as Chandraprasad Saikia’s ‘Maharathi’, an Assamese
novel.

Key words: Destiny, Curse, Myth, Mythological character, Reconstruction.
