SOCIOLINGUISTIC APPROACH TO IDENTITY NEGOTIATION AND SECOND LANGUAGE ADOPTION: A CASE STUDY OF NEW IMMIGRANTS IN DELHI

Abstract
In recent times, the understanding of language particularly as its regard its usage, style and
acquisition has gained traction. The study adopted a linguistics approach to identify how immigrants strike
balance between their interaction goals and utilizing their identity related goals such as communication and
psychological coherence in adopting Hindi as a second language. The paper elicited information through the
administration of interview guides and excerpts of focus group discussions among selected new immigrants in
Delhi. The study reveals that the new immigrants learned and improved their ability to communicates in Hindi
and also improve their knowledge of their host cultural practices in order to integrate seamlessly into the Delhi
society. However, new immigrants are faced with detrainment in participating in political activities, poor social
relationship with the natives and are also subjected to contribute to Delhiís economy to the level in which Delhi
indigenes or natives can tolerate their presence. This study also highlighted the variations in the language
vocabulary, syntax, phonetics and grammatical judgment between immigrants and Hindiís native speakers. The
study concluded that identification with a culture and usage of language does not equate or implies belonging or
ownership of culture and language respectively.
