MPLS: A Novel Traffic Engineering Mechanism for Communication Networks

Abstract
The enhancement in communication networks increases the usage of the internet vastly. The data transmission
without loss is very essential in communication networks. For reliable data communication, the routing mechanism
is essential in communication networks. The traditional IP networks overcome the link failures using the Re-
Routing mechanism. The mechanism identifies the alternate way in the network when the link failure
occurs. However, the re-routing mechanism achieved better results in communication networks. But the alternate
path selection after link failure occurs is suboptimal. To overcome the limitation of the re-routing mechanism, this
research work proposed Multi-Protocol Label Switching(MPLS) mechanism. This traffic engineering mechanism
utilizes the fast-reroute and best path selection for link and node failure in communication networks. The
implementation is done using the NS2. MPLS mechanism achieved better performance and the evident shown in
simulation results. The novel MPLS mechanism have high performance with comparison conventional IP networks
in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay, and data transmission
