Abstract
The current systematic review and meta-analysis examined the predictors of suicidal behaviour prevalence and thoughts from the perspective of individual, family and school environment variables associated with it and primary preventions strategies adopted children and adolescent population in India. the current study adopted Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to systematically search MEDLINE, PubMed, PyschEXTRA and PsycINFO databases and also the bibliography list to explore the prevalence, risk factors and primary prevention strategies. Only studies involving children and adolescents with an independent measure of suicide in India were included. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, ten studies were included in this review. Two independent authors executed the articles screening, and the quality of studies was assessed by the lead author. For measure a pooled estimate of the prevalence of depression, the random effects meta-analyses were performed. The bivariate random-effects model was used in a subgroup of criterion-related validity studies for calculating a pooled specificity and sensitivity estimate. The present meta-analysis included ten studies that were eligible to analyse the prevalence of suicide ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) among Indian adolescent population. Nine studies focused on suicide ideation while five studies on Suicide attempt. Several factors found to impact the prevalence including stress, academic difficulties and lack of supportive environment in the school, a parental relationship such as pressure from parents or other family members were found to be significantly associated with suicidal ideation. In conclusion, risk factors of suicide are very complex in India but constantly rising. Socio-family environment, stressful life events, lifestyle, psychological/psychiatric, academic stress, and parental relationship are the main risk factors for suicidal behaviour in India. Especially, the prevalence was higher among girls than boys. Interventions should concentrate on unhealthy lifestyles, school factors and changing family environments for young people.
