THE INFLUENCE OF SEASONALITY AND SOLVENT TYPES ON INHIBITION OF INFLAMMATION, α-GLUCOSIDASE, TYROSINASE AND PANCREATIC LIPASE BY CAMELLIA MISTLETOE

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of harvest periods (February, May, August and November) and extraction solvents (methanol and ethanol) on the bioactivities of Camellia mistletoe, Korthalsella japonica. In vitro enzyme inhibitory potentials against α-glucosidase, pancreatic lipase and tyrosinase were determined. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory action of Camellia mistletoe extracts on IFN-𝛾 plus LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages have been investigated using nitric oxide (NO) assay. The methanol extracts showed much higher inhibitory activities against enzymes α-glucosidase (2.9-5.5 μg/ml IC50), pancreatic lipase (310.8-395.7 μg/ml IC50) and tyrosinase (859.0-1406.4 μg/ml IC50) evaluated, with the highest inhibitory activity reported for the enzyme α-glucosidase. Similarly, methanol extracts (89.7-96.8% at 200 μg/ml) of Camellia mistletoe also possessed much higher NO inhibition than ethanol extracts 66.7-94.8% at 200 μg/ml). A considerable seasonal variation of inhibition of α-glucosidase, lipase, tyrosinase and NO production was observed in Camellia mistletoe extracts, with February and November being the highest and May the lowest. The present study not only showed the potential therapeutic activity of Camellia mistletoe, but also provided criteria for establishing the optimum harvest period and extraction solvent to increase beneficial compounds in Camellia mistletoe.
