Medical Image Fusion Based on Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Sets and New Activity Measure in NSST Domain

Abstract
This paper addresses a new medical image fusion (MIF) problem, utilizing Shearlet transform and interval
type-2 fuzzy sets. The non-sub sampled Shearlet transform (NSST) is utilized as decomposition transform to obtain the
corresponding high (HFSB), low pass (LFSB) sub -bands respectively. The HFSBs are integrated by fusion strategy
using the new activity measure based on phase congruency, sharpness change and weighted local energy. The LFSBs are
integrated by entropy based on interval type2 fuzzy sets. The fused HFSB and LFSBs are inversely transformed to
produce the final fused image. Four pairs of multi-modality medical source images are used to prove the validness of
the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme is freed from the existing MIF shortcomings like unwanted degradations,
artifacts, magnificent details loss, etc. Both the type of evaluations i.e., subjective and objective show outstanding
performance for this new approach compared to other existing techniques.
