INFLUENCE OF SBS POLYMERS ON THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN

Abstract
Bitumen is widely used as a binder material in road construction and it possess numerous merits.
Though, flow and deformation characteristic of the raw bitumen significantly influenced the pavement properties
and limits the application of bitumen in various applications. In such a context, modification of bitumen binder
using polymers or by anti-stripping additives is a well known technique to enhance the mixturesí strengths against
common damages. In this present study, SBS polymer was used as a binder additive to improve the engineering
properties of the VG30 bitumen. SBS polymer added to the bitumen ranging from 2% to 5% by total weight of
bitumen. Conventional tests include penetration, softening point, ductility and viscosity test have been performed
to assess the stability performance of the SBS polymer-modified bitumen. The presence of SBS polymer in the
bitumen increased polymer chain stiffness and improved the penetration resistance and viscosity of the bitumen.
The polymer modified bitumenís were exhibited higher phase angle than neat bitumen. The 5% SBS polymer
incorporation improved the penetration resistance and viscosity of the bitumen by 26.78% and 13.23%,
respectively, when compared to neat bitumen. The temperature sensitivity of the polymer modified bitumenís was
improved with the incorporation rate of SBS polymer. Since the elastic proportion of the bitumen proportional to
the incorporation rate of SBS polymer, the polymer modified bitumenís were shown significant increase in the
ductility.
