Abstract
If we question ourselves about the need of teaching the receptive and productive skills to the
learners, the answer will obviously be yes. Misinterpretation and confusion in communication process can be
avoided by introducing the discourse strategies. Communication is a process of exchanging information among
individuals in a society. But mere expression of words may not lead to effective communication. One cannot
respond automatically to what one listens or reads. Decoding, analyzing, interpreting are the pre-requisites of
communication. Any deviation from the coordinated efforts of the communicators may lead to misinterpretation.
While reading a text ambiguities may cause uncertainty or confusion in readers‘ thought processes. Sometimes
the writer may narrate to decode the text for multiple meanings. This strategy is to grab the attention of the
readers so as to create interest in reading. Readers‘ readiness for reading and potentiality for interpretative skills
are vital in language learning. The present paper makes an attempt to analyze language skills of the students in
interpreting ambiguous texts.

Key words: Misreading, interpretation, misinterpretation, lexical ambiguity, language and meaning.
