INVESTIGATING THE STRESS FACED BY TEACHING PROFESSIONAL IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract
The study was conducted to identify the key stressors existing among the higher education teachers in
Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, India. The study adopted a descriptive research design. For study 400 samples
were considered using a simple rand sampling technique. The study variables considered for the study are
stressors related to; Work, Working hour, Interpersonal relationship, Research related, Teaching related, Service
related, General Work, Work / Family Conflict, and job satisfaction. The researcher adopted independent
sample test, descriptive statistics, rank analysis using the mean score and Pearson correlation statistical
techniques to fulfil the objectives of the study. The result indicates that there is no significant difference in the
level of stress among male and female higher education teachers. Further, it was confirmed that the level of
stress for the male is comparatively higher than the female. Irrespective of gender, stress related to; Service,
Work, Working hour and Work/ Family conflict is existing among higher education teachers significantly. Also,
the study confirms that the existence of stress reduces the satisfaction of the teachers in Job. Hereby the
institutions and government are suggested to take all possible remedial steps to provide a better working
environment, liberalize the working hour and reduce the administrative workload as well as to appoint a
psychologist for the personal counselling for the welfare of higher educating teachers.
