FORM OR CONTENT? REVISITING THE CONTOURS OF COMPOSITION WRITING WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Abstract
Research Studies on ESL Writing have always shown that numerous teaching practiceshave been conducted to
hone writing skills.Accordingly, research has been done in the area of testing and evaluation of paraphrase
writingfocussing on the balance between the structure and content but the scale of writing assessment weighs
more on the side of form and structure that the content of writing is often felt neglected in classroom
composition activities. There seems to be very little research done with regard to the content of writing.The
paper attempts to explore ways to assess the paraphrase writing focusing on the content of writing . An attempt
has been made to analyse the content of paraphrase writing in 151 writing scripts of undergraduate ESL
engineering students in India. Based on the empirical study conducted the paper suggests for a significant
emphasis on the assessment of content in writing instructionby drawing back to the existing researches on why
and how content plays a crucial role in ESL composition activities.
