MAMORU OSHII’SGHOST IN THE SHELL: A POSTHUMAN NARRATIVE ON THE DUALITY OF MIND AND BODY

R. Ramya, Dr. Rukmini. S.

Abstract
Ghost in the Shell is a complex modern feat of Japanese animation movies. The movie has inspired many modernday
blockbuster science fiction movies in Hollywood. An inspirational precursor dealing with the wake of the 7th
kingdom of Technium. A posthuman nightmare of inseparable conflict of real and the unreal. The movie is a class
canon on the human attempts to understand the existential crisis and the epistemology of meaning of life, from the
standpoint of a cyborg.
This paper tries to bring out the movie‘s philosophies on artificial evolution of human beings set in the
prospects of resolving the long-debated conflict of the mind and body through posthuman tampering of the natural
with technology using Descartes‘ ideas of mind and body.

Key words: Mind and body duality, cyberpunk, philosophy, science fiction
