AN INVESTIGATION INTO TECHNIQUES USED FOR IMAGE-BASED OBJECT DETECTION AND CLASSIFICATION

Abstract
Image Classification is a tedious process involved in Computer Vision and Image Processing applications. It
refers to the task of categorizing object instances such as human beings, animals, etc in certain predefined
categories or classes while object detection is the branch of computer vision that deals with object localization
and classification in images. They have wide applications in fields of research such as face detection, pedestrian
detection, video surveillance, image retrieval, object tracking, etc. Classical models of object detection are based
on handcrafted features and conservative designs that stagnate when cluttered and low-resolution datasets are
used. These shortcomings of classical models are overcome with the evolution of the deep learning era. Deep
Learning provides powerful algorithms that can learn complex features and higher-level semantics itself. In this
paper, various image-based classification and object detection algorithms and issues in these techniques are
considered for review.
