REDUCTIONOF THE COST AND UNDESIRABLE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT BY REPLACING ALUM WITH A SUITABLE ALTERNATIVE COAGULANT IN INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT OF KHUZESTAN STEEL COMPANY

Abstract
The most important environmental problem of steel industries is the wastewater produced during their
processes. Flocculation and coagulationare among the conventional chemical treatmentsthat are extensively
used to remove contaminants from industrial wastewaters. Alum is widely used as a coagulant in the chemical
treatment of industrial wastewater. However, due to the formation of aluminum salts, alum plays a major role in
increasing the aluminum concentrationofthe treated wastewater. Today, the negative effect of excessive amounts
of aluminum in water on human health has been reportedby international scientific and medical authorities. The
aim of this study is to find a suitable coagulant as an alternative to alum in order to reduce the costs and
undesirable environmental effects of industrial wastewater treatment of Khuzestan Steel Company(KSC). To do
this, the jartest was carried out to compare the performance of several chemicals including alum, FeCl3, PAC
and PAFCas coagulant. Results showed thatPAFC at an injection dosage of 15 ppm had the highest effects on
water turbidity reduction. In general, using PAFC instead of alum can reduce the coagulant injection rate by
75% resulting in a reduction in undesirable environmental effects of the industrial wastewater treatment.
