Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of renewal of stand-formingspecies in coniferous-broad-leaved and southern-taiga
forest areas of the central European part of Russia. In addition, due to the intensive use of forests and increasing
recreational load, for the purpose of rational planning of renewal of forest resources, there is a need for a systematic
assessment of the natural and artificial reforestation. Study of the renewal process is essential for the estimation of the
recreational degradation of stands, since it determines the possibility of renewal of economically valuable tree stands.
For areas with a developed network of roads, the problem of deterioration of species and qualitative composition of
forests as a result of long and intense forest exploitation is increasing. This is what determined the purpose of the study,
which was carried out in the form of a field survey of forest areas on permanent and temporary study plots usingthe
A.V.Pobedinsky method. This article includes an analytical review of scientific studieson the sustainability of logging
sitesreclamation and characteristics of the forest renewal in the area of particular interest for the research, as
anunsustainable approach to this problem leads to an undesirable change of species. Based on the experimental data and
the analysis of taxonomic characteristics of stands, as well as statistical reports, it has been established that productive
saplings are formed naturally in the coniferous-broad-leaved and southern-taiga forest regions of the center of the
European part of Russia and do not requireimprovement cutting. The article also suggests inventorization criteria for the
undergrowth and saplings of small-leaved species.

Key words: undergrowth, underwood, forest crops, natural saplings, renewal, forest site factors
