PERFORMANCE AND EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS ANALYSIS OF 20% BLENDS OF MAHUA AND JATROPHA BIODIESEL ON CI ENGINE

Abstract
In view of the rising price of fossil fuel and environmental pollution, alternative fuel is needed. In search of such fuel, biodiesel has drawn everyone’s attention. Biodiesel may be a tremendous substitute for fossil fuel. The current paper represents a comparative analysis of the biodiesel Mahua and Jatropha. The two biodiesels were produced from two-step transesterification process. Then 20 percentage blends of the biodiesels were used in diesel engine separately at varying load. Results were calculated and then compared within the term of performance parameters and composition of emission compounds. The results indicate that the carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), CO2 and smoke produced by blends J20 (jatropha 20% blend) and M20 (mahua 20% blend) are lower than pure diesel (D100). The brake thermal efficiency (BTE) was lowest with M20. The D100 exhibits the lowest brake specific fuel consumption. Also, both (J20 and M20) produce more NOx than diesel. In terms of emission, J20 shows better results than M20. Also, EGT (exhaust gas temperature) is lower for J20 and M20 in comparison with D100.
