ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING CONSIDERING MANUFACTURING AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES

Abstract
Manufacturing sector has been shifted its focus towards creating environment friendly manufacturing facilities to meet stringent regulatory guidelines and to achieve competitive economic advantage. Non –conventional machining processes such as Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) produces waste and aerosol which has significant impact on environmental and economic considerations. So, experimental investigation was carried out to identify optimal parametric combination for simultaneous optimization of machining performance measures namely material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (Ra) and aerosol emission. The experiments were designed using Taguchi‟s L18 orthogonal array. The machining variables namely pulse –on-time, polarity, peak current, flushing pressure, and gap voltage were given due consideration during research study. Grey relational analysis (GRA) technique was coupled with results of orthogonal experiments to identify optimum factor level combinations. Furthermore, the confirmation experiments depicted improvement in considered response characteristics.
