Abstract
A comparative study was done on patients with Kala-azar attending to Al-Karamah Teaching Hospital
and some of Health Centers in different parts of Iraq, during the period from January 2019 to April
2019. Blood samples were collected from 112 suspected patients with Kala-azar. Sera were separated
and kept at (-20oC) until used. The clinical and epidemiological criteria of the disease were discussed.
The diagnosis depended on the clinical presentation, rK39 dipstick, ELISA and IFAT.
One hundred-twelve of kala-azar patients were studied depending on their positive rK39 dipstick test in
all ages. The higher infection 45 (46.9 %) of the studied cases were found below the age of one year,
while the lower infection 10 (10.4%) were appeared in age group (< 12 years old) and the male was
predominance 53 (55.2%) than females 43 (44.8%). There was no significant differences between both
sexes was found in respect to age. The ELISA test results were positive in 96 (85.7% , the rK39 test 94
(83.9%) and IFAT test 89 (79.5%) of the studied cases.
The current study aimed to compare among three serological methods; immunochromatographic
dipstick strip (rK39),Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescent antibody
test (IFAT) for diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Wasit Province.
Conclusion :
A rK39 dipstick test was more easy to perform but less sensitive than ELISA and IFAT tests. Kala-azar
should be suspected in any patient with prolonged fever and hepatosplenomegaly.

Key words: rK39, ELISA, IFAT, kala-azar, human
