Segmentation of Brain Tumour Regions using 3D Region Based Snake

Abstract
Active contour models are used in detecting edges using the intensity inhomogeneity.The intensity inhomogeneity cannot be used in detecting edges in the case of medical images because these images have poorly defined boundaries.Traditional edge stop functions use gradient information,so they cannot be used in contour evolution of medical images.To overcome this problem we propose a semi_automatedregion based snake model.The region based snake is the sum of two terms, a regularising term and a data term.The data term is region based because it is the integration of the three dimensional subregion of the image plane.The segmentation of the tumour region is obtained by continuously reshaping the contour until the tumour region is segmented.Experiments on the BRATS database shows that the segmented region is close to the ground truth and in some cases it is better than the ground truth.
