COMPARISON OF NONLINEAR METHODS FOR ENHANCING AND CORRECTING THE FUNDUS IMAGES

Abstract
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) affects the vascular structure of retina which results in loss of vision.
The abnormalities in the retina caused due to the progression of DR can be characterized based on the minor variation in the vasculature. Starting from vascular dilation it progresses to development of new blood vessels. To visualize these variations at the earliest it is necessary to enhance the Fundus image for better visualization of vascular structure of retina. In this work, Histogram equalization based methods are employed to enhance the images also top hat transform and gamma gradient methods are employed to correct the illumination effects in Fundus images. The enhanced images are validated using statistical error measures and similarity metrics. Results show that Brightness Preserving Fuzzy Histogram Equalization (BPFHE) algorithm exhibit better enhancing capability compared to gamma correction method and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) method. The value of peak signal
to noise ratio is found to be high for BPFHE method compared to CLAHE and gamma correction methods. This indicates that there is no loss of information about the retinal structure of the eye. The Mean square error and Normalized absolute error values are found to be less compared to aforementioned methods indicating that there is no false identification of structures is observed in BPFHE method. Gradient gamma correction method shows better ability in eliminating the illumination effects in images. This is supported by the increased value of similarity metrics compared to Top-Hat transform.
