NANOTECHNOLOGY BASED IMAGING MODALITIES IN ORAL CANCER: A BRIEF REVIEW

Abstract
Nanotechnology, a multidisciplinary scientific discipline, has advanced by leaps and bounds in
the last four decades. Oral cancer (OC), has a 5-year survival rate of less than 50% if detected in the late stages
and a much higher rate when detected early. Hence an emphasis on the early detection of oral cancer is vital, to
reduce the burden of the disease. Nanotechnology has been an integral part of nanomedicine, and in recent
times, the usefulness of nanotechnology-based imaging modalities as a tool for oral cancer detection, metastasis,
treatment, and prognosis has been an area of active exploration. Imaging modalities have been used as
adjunctive techniques and used in combination with histopathology. The ability to track cancerous cells in
vivo, in a non-invasive manner, with real-time, and long-time imaging are of considerable interest in detecting
early occurrence of tumours, metastasis, and achieving accurate surgical margins during biopsy and treatment.
These imaging techniques also provide real-time cancer cell morphology. This article will attempt to review a
few of the nanotechnology based molecular imaging techniques, namely optical coherence tomography (OCT),
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), photoacoustic imaging, and quantum dot imaging (QD), used in oral cancer
detection, metastasis, treatment, and prognosis.
