A Vision Based Hand Gesture Recognition Technique

Abstract
Human computer interaction technology has been increasing tremendously along with the rapid
growth in technology. Automated gestures and sign language being important for human and machine interaction
plays a vital role and is a solution to overcome many difficulties in human life. Hence great efforts are put in the
field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) to develop efficient techniques as a result reducing human barriers
with machines. The hand gesture recognition is an important component in this field and has applications in all
fields being healthcare, robotics, education etc. It provides ability to computers and machine to capture and
interpret gestures made by hand and further execute system commands. Many methodologies and techniques are
being used for hand gesture recognition, where vision based methods are efficient in creating and implementing
gesture based recognition system. This paper provides a review of the techniques used in hand gesture recognition
based on vision, their applications and challenges.

Key words: Hand gesture recognition, Human computer interaction (HCI), feature extraction, sign language, image processing.
