IMPACT OF ARSENIC TOXICITY ON ORYZA SATIVA L. AND ITS AMELIORATION USING EUGENOL

Abstract
The arsenic toxicity in groundwater, especially in South-East Asia, is among the most serious environmental
problems. In soil conditions and even in crop quality, arsenic-polluted irrigation water generates threats to life.
In the present study, the response of Oryza sativa L to arsenic alone or jointly to eugenol exposure in a dosedependent
manner under the hydroponic mediumhas been investigated. Arsenic-treated rice plants showed a
reduction in their growth with an increase in the activities of antioxidative enzymes like superoxide dismutase,
peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and catalase showing oxidative stress. In most of the parameters tested under
arsenic treatment alone, the joint application of eugenol with arsenic resulted in substantial alterations, leading
to better growth of Oryza sativa L. This study revealed that arsenic-induced oxidative stress in Oryza sativa L
was significantly ameliorated by eugenol treatment.
