UNDERSTANDING THE FINANCIAL DISTRESS IN INDIAN BANKING SECTOR

Ajay Khurana, Rajiv Khosla.

Abstract
Not long ago, World Economic Situation and Prospects released by the United Nations, estimated
that the global growth which slowed to 2.3 percent in 2019 will accelerate in the year 2020 to touch 2.5 percent.
However, the economic recovery path worldwide got badly obstructed by the spread of novel corona virus.
Latest estimates by the world’s leading institutions have now painted a bleak picture for the global growth.
Moody’s, OECD and Fitch expect the real GDP in the global perspective to range between 1.3 to 2.4 percent
which is 0.5 to 1 percentage points less than their earlier estimates. At this juncture banks are increasingly being
seen as the systemic stabilizers which can be catalytic in bailing out the world’s economic ordeal, since nonperforming loans have eased in most of the advanced (US, Australia, Eurozone) and emerging economies
(Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Phillipines). However, an increase in non-performing loans in Indian banking
sector plagued by a series of other problems raise apprehensions on the tempo of recovery of Indian economy.
This study intends to find out the causes that led the Indian banks becoming so fragile.

Key words: GDP, recovery of Indian economy, Indian banking sector
