MORPHOLOGIC CHANGES IN THE MEGACHIROPTERAN BAT(ROUSETTUS LESCHENAULTI), AT TERM PREGNANCY- A TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY STUDY

Abstract
The amniotic epithelium forms some of the collagen of the underlying mesenchyme. A welldefined system of cell shedding can be observed by TEM. The fact that in normal pregnancy the basement
membrane is uncovered during the cell shedding process indicates that this structure plays a primordial role in
preserving the integrity of the amniotic cavity, and possibly, in analogy to the kidney, may very well have an
important filtering role. The exceedingly delicate amnion of the Rousettus at term pregnancy on Transmission
Electron Microscopy consisted of a single layer of epithelial cells, a basal lamina, a thin support of connective
tissue and a mesothelium. The epithelium consisted of cuboidal to columnar cells of varying electron density.
Mitotic figures were virtually absent from the amnionic epithelium at term. Numerous large cytoplasmic
projections from the less dense epithelial cells were found. Junctional complex connected adjacent epithelial
cells, which were often separated by large extracellular spaces into which microvilli projected. In Rousettus the
amnionic epithelial cells also appeared to be randomly arranged in a jigsaw pattern. The nucleus was large,
dense and slightly irregular. The nucleus contained coarse, dark staining nucleolemma and at least one nucleolus.
The amniotic epithelium at term is usually a single layer of columnar to squamous cells. Pinocytosis occured at
the free microvillous border. In addition to typical organelles, the cytoplasm contained many intermediate
filaments, many of which were associated with desmosomes.The hemidesmosomes were thickening of the
plasma membrane adjacent to the basal lamina similar to those seen in certain squamous epithelia. Pinocytosis
occured at the podocytic projections, as the vesicles, were noted to be many and in rows. The basal plasma
membranes are considerably convoluted and associated with pinocytotic vesicles.
The primary purpose of this study are to review the architectural features of the amnion through the application
of Transmission Electron Microscopy.
