SEGMENTATION OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES

Abstract
Early detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is beneficial for monitoring disease progression and choosing the
appropriate treatment to prevent it from worsening. The common method to observe DR is through retinal
fundus image by analyzing the occurrence of hemorrhage and hard exudates that marked the early stages of DR.
Morphological segmentation of the green channel image showed 88.6% accuracy and 82.3% accuracy for
hemorrhage and hard exudate detection, respectively. However, compared to existing studies this value is
relatively low because the removal of blood vessels and optic discs is not included. Therefore, further studies are
needed to improve the specificity of hemorrhage detection and sensitivity of hard exudate detection
