The Impact of Leadership Style and Strategy Implementation on Financial Performance: Middle Managers’ Point of View

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of leadership style and strategy implementation on the financial performance of middle-level managers in indonesia by testing a hypothesized model. A quantitative survey was conducted with 500 ‘middle managers’ in indonesia in 2016. The questionnaire utilized a simple random sampling method, and the hypotheses were tested through an sem analysis. The results showed that transactional and transformational leadership styles affect the organization’s performance, especially for financial performance. However, transformational leadership will be more effective if it is built through successful strategy implementation rather than done directly to support financial performance. By building links between the leadership style and financial performance, an organization will know the effects of leadership style on their employee performance, while the transactional leadership used to give an immediate effect on the financial and transformational leadership will have negative effects if it is applied directly to drive the financial performance. The findings suggest that to have an immediate result on a company, transactional leadership is the best leadership style. However, to be successful in leading change, transformational leadership should be applied. Moreover, a leader should have both leadership styles and know when to use each.
