Immediate Socio-economic Impact of COVID 19 on Youth: A Case of Bangladesh

Abstract
This paper is the first study done to identify the immediate ways in which the young people in Bangladesh between the ages of 15 to 29 have been affected due to the lockdown. An online survey was carried out for this purpose and results are based on these primary data. Out of all the respondents, 58.6% said they are more worried about their future, 48% said their university graduation has been delayed, 35% reported they lost their motivation to work or study, 27.1% said their school or college completion got delayed and 24.9% said their current monthly income had decreased. Other responses include delays or cancellation of university admission examination for 11%, loss in one current job for 9.9%, delay in job offers for 8.8%, complete loss of a job for 5% and inability to continue education further due to financial stress for another 5%. The paper also discusses the likely socio-economic impacts these youth may face based on previous experiences from epidemics such as SARS and Ebola and the 2008 global financial crisis.
