A STUDY ON TRADITIONAL RICE FARMERíS MARKETING EFFECIENCY IN TAMILNADU

Abstract
Rice marketing is the dominant role in the world market. Rice plays a primary crop in agriculture. Rice farmers are
cultivating traditional and Hybrid varieties of rice in India. Recently the farmers are interested to cultivate traditional
rice varieties in India. Nowadays the consumers are turned to purchase the traditional rice varieties due to organic
system. The farmers have the problem to identify the market of their rice in the market. Hence the study was
conducted to test the traditional rice farmerís marketing efficiency in Tamilnadu. The study had the objectives to
examine the marketing efficiency of farmers in Tamilnadu with special reference to Thiruvarur, Thirunelveli,
Thiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram and Pudukkottai Districts. In Each Districts, 20 farmers were selected as sample of
respondents. Totally 120 samples were used in this study. Simple Random Sampling was adopted in this study. The
research is Descriptive in nature. Cost and return analysis, Marketing Margin and Marketing efficiency were used to
test the net return, Productivity function and percentage of farmersí share. Percentage analysis was used to find out
the socio economic background of the farmers. The marketing efficiency in Tamilnadu may be vary from one place
to another. This table shows that most popular traditional rice varieties such as Seeraga Samba (Biriyani Rice),
Mappillai Samba, Karuppukavuni and Karunguruvai were high marketing efficiency. The study concluded that the
traditional rice varieties can be given as value added product to increase the market.
