EXPLORING STRATEGIC ORIENTATION OF HRD SYSTEMS: A CASE OF INDIAN SERVICE INDUSTRIES

Padmalita Routray, Amarnath Padhi.

Abstract
The service sector has not only been the leading field in India's economy but has also drawn
significant foreign investment flows. The evolution of the concept of HRD has made it more strategic. In the
recent past, the value of human resource development in the service industries has started to attract academicians
and the practitioner's attention to increase organizational effectiveness and realization of strategic goals. Based
on a sample of 151 respondents of selective service firms in Odisha, an eastern state of India, this study explores
the relation between the strategic orientation of the HRD function and system across selected service industries.
The study provides a differential result across the sectors. Our findings also offer some interesting insights into
the adoption of the SHRD system in the Indian context.

Key words: HRD, SHRD, Strategic Orientation, Service Sector, Odisha
