POWER SYSTEM DYNAMIC STATE FAULT MONITORING AND PROTECTION WITH PHASOR MEASUREMENTS USING FUZZY BASED EXPERT SYSTEM

Abstract
This paper deals with building of a small micro grid system with a couple of sources, building of
transmission line and few loads with different types of lumped resistive (R), inductive (L) and capacitive (C)
elements. Before the advent of smart grid each load has its own electromagnetic or static protective relay. Later
numerical relays came into existence, which replaced these electromagnetic or static relays. Since these
numerical relays were able to communicate with each other and with the central computer, a coordinative
protection system was evolved. Several numerical relays were now replaced by intelligent electronic devices for
dynamic state monitoring and protection. Improvement in communications and the introduction of wireless data
communications, artificial intelligence into power system made it is possible for the power system to be centrally
controlled. It will help to protect the system in a dynamic state with the help of phasor measurements. In this
paper, it is presented that the phasor calculation of voltage and current signals, power calculation, fault
monitoring and protection against different types of faults, voltage variations and frequency variations using
Fuzzy Based Expert System (FBES). This protection scheme is adaptive for voltage variations, frequency
variations, and fault levels. The fuzzy based expert system used in this paper is achieved from the structure of
MAMDANI system in LabVIEW software.
