Title: Movement for Scheduled Tribe Status of Tai Ahom of Assam in India

Bornali Hati Boruah.

Abstract
The present study intends to understand the ethnic attributes of the Tai Ahom and also tries to explore the
debates on the demand for Scheduled Tribe (Plain) status to Tai Ahom of Assam. The Tai Ahom is an
ethnic community of Assam having the Mongoloid feature pre-dominant. The Tai Ahoms are the
descendants of the Mao-Shan branch of the great Tai race who had ruled Assam for about six hundred year
and contributed a great deal in the formation of a greater Assamese society. In subsequent time they have
given the status of Other Backward Class (OBC) which failed to fulfil their aspirations and hence emerging
educated elite of the Tai Ahom started asserting their distinct identity with the demand of Scheduled Tribes
(Plain) status. However, the issue of scheduling Tai Ahom involves complexities centring around whether
they meet the appropriate norms such as indication of primitive traits, distinctive culture, geographical
isolation, shyness of contact and backwardness etc.The issue of awarding ST (P) status to Tai Ahom has
acquired distinct political colours, with different political parties putting their weight behind the movement
for obvious reasons. Moreover, the issue of granting of Scheduled Tribe Status of Tai Ahoms remains
inconclusive.

Key words: Tai Ahom,Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, Educated elite, Identity
