Abstract
This paper is an attempt to look into the business practices of handicraft activities considering them as informal entrepreneurs. The study investigated the working characteristics of the handicraft entrepreneurs as well as the problems faced by them. The study has selected Nagaon district purposely as a geographical area and have collected 43 samples from different parts of Nagaon using snowball sampling technique. The findings of the study highlighted that most of the respondents were young, at their productive age and were well experienced in their present occupation. They were self-employed, independent entrepreneurs who worked tirelessly 8 to 10 hours per day and throughout the week. Starting with low level of initial funding, they were earning satisfactory surplus per month. However, they faced the problem inadequacy of finance and competition while running their business. Proper institutional framework on the part of the government and policy makers to provide finance, infrastructure and technical and marketing facilities can help these informal entrepreneurs to sustain, develop, and expand their enterprises for further employment and income generation.
