CFD Simulation of Direct Injection CI Engine Combustion and Optimization of Omega-shape Toroidal Piston Bowl Geometry for Emissions

Abstract
Flow fields are generated before combustion in internal combustion engines during the induction
process in suction stroke, and they change in the compression stroke. It is essential to understand the fluid
movement during suction and compression strokes during the development of new engine designs with the
expectation of developing reliable performance and emission features. Therefore, computational investigations
have been conducted to comprehend the role of in-cylinder flow arrangement. In this 3D CFD, Ansys Forte V18
is used to study the in-cylinder fluid motion and performance and emissions of the direct injection compression
ignition engines with flat piston bowl and Omega-shape toroidal piston bowl. The validation of the CFD results
is done with the experimental results available for flat piston bowl. The optimization of the bowl geometry for
Omega-shape toroidal piston bowl with a fixed compression ratio has been carried out by varying the central pip
height and toroidal radius. The obtained results are plotted when the compression and expansion strokes are
investigated. The results showed that the bowl shapes play a vital role in the in-cylinder fluid motion, performance
and emissions of compression ignition engines. In compression ignition engines it can be observed that it controls
the fuel-air mixing and rates of burning
