SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERíS AWARENESS ON GREEN SCHOOL CONCEPT IN MALAYSIA

Abstract
Green school has proven to bring benefits towards students. It has been studied, developed and implemented globally. However, the are no development of green school in Malaysia. As the climate change are getting worse from day to day, Malaysia must take into account all initiatives that can reduce global warming. This research is carried out to take the first step of introducing green school concept to secondary school teachers by identifying their awareness on the subject matter. The green school concept is management, energy efficiency, transportation, water, waste management, pollution, sustainable site management, indoor environmental quality, integration and operation. This study is a quantitative study and are focused in Kuala Lumpur. Questionnaires were distributed to 81 secondary school teachers. Relative Importance Index (RII) was used to rank teachersí awareness on green building concept. The ranking of the highest awareness to lowest was ranked as follows: - (1) transportation, (2) waste management, (3) pollution, (4) indoor air quality, (5) sustainable site management, (6) operation, (7) integration, water and energy. From this study, it shows that teachers are not environmentally literate, therefore more actions should be taken for the teachers to have latest knowledge on environment and sustainability.
