POST-COLONIAL INDIAN MIDDLE CLASS EXPECTATION AND REALITY: A STUDY OF UPAMANYU CHATTERJEE’S ENGLISH AUGUST: AN INDIAN STORY

Mohammed Shafeer K P, Dr. B. Kathiresan.

Abstract
Colonisation pervaded to the different parts of the world justifying „the White Man‟s Burden‟ creating an illusion of acculturation of the indigenous communities. It created the binary of the cultured colonial master and the savage colonised subject, representing the two extremes of Eurocentric cultural definition. The coloniser proclaimed that “The native races were primitive, child-like, effeminate, irrational, irreligious (since „pagan‟ religion was deemed to be no religion at all), criminal, and unreliable.” (Nayar 4)The acculturation of the colonial savage was through the adaption/imitation of colonial standards of culture, language, religion and law. The colonial powers with the silent cooperation or through the forcible enactment began the Anglicisation or Europeanization in most of the colonies. The loot and exploitation, the atrocities and massacres –all were justified with the reasons of purgation of savage from savagery to sacredness.
