COMBATING AIR POLLUTION AND LAWS IN INDIA

Smita Tyagi.

Abstract
Air pollution is a menance which is not new in India. It has been a matter of research and debate
for decades. The issue has threatened the survival of mankind itself. Though, various measures are adopted and
millions are spent every now and then to combat this unwelcome situation by the Government, yet, it fails to
provide to the people living in the country the air quality which meets the National Air Quality Standards of
India. A large number of people have been found to have developed major health issues because of the
unbearable air quality in the country. The air quality in most of the cities is not just unsatisfactory but, they have
had such declining quality of air that it has become a money-making matter for the businesses in exchange of
providing some amount of breathable air to the people. There have been rules and laws implemented in order to
make sure the air quality does not deteriorate but how effective such laws have been, is still questionable. The
paper aims to identify the factors which have an impact on air pollution, whether major or minor, and to
determine how potent the air pollution laws have been in overcoming this intensely enlarging setback. Also, it
aims to point out how effective the various introduced measures have been to prevail over the problem and what
better measures may be taken towards achieving the goal of a pollution-free country.

Key words: Air pollution, health issues, money-making business, air pollution laws.
