EVALUATION OF THE COMPETENCIES OF DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING TEACHERS IN JEDDAH CITY, ACCORDING TO THE STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE APPROVED BY THE CEC

Alshahrani, Mohammad Mobark.

Abstract
In this article, the researcher reports the competencies of teachers of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students (TDHHSs) according to the standards of professional practice approved by the US Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), as there is no equivalent standardized professional practice in Saudi Arabia. The research took place in Jeddah, the second largest city of Saudi Arabia, and set out to investigate the extent to which TDHHSs possessed these competencies and their awareness of their importance in evaluating their teaching professionally. Quantitative data were gathered by means of a survey administered to a sample of (102) TDHHSs. The analysis takes account of a number of variables, including the level of importance that respondents assigned to the competencies and the extent to which they possessed them, according to their qualifications, length of experience and type of inclusive programme. The author concludes that awareness of the importance of competencies among TDHHSs was strong in all dimensions and that overall competency scores were high in the dimensions of instructional strategies, language, and instructional planning in favor of specialized SEN teachers. They suggest that there is more work to be done on the development of standardized TDHHSs‟ competencies in Saudi Arabia and offer recommendations for future practice, focusing on initial teacher education and continuing professional development.

Key words: Teachers‟ competencies, Deaf, Hard of Hearing students, inclusive classrooms, special schools.
