A CONTEMPORARY METHOD FOR HARMONICS SUPPRESSION IN POWER SYSTEM BY IMPLEMENTING SHUNT ACTIVE POWER FILTER

Abstract
Nowadays the usage of non-linear loads in grid is increasing sufficiently i.e. UPS, inverters, power converters etc, such loads can cause harmonics and other power quality problems in the network. Harmonics developed make the supply current as non-sinusoidal and distorted. An approach to manage harmonics in an electrical power system with nonlinear load has been presented. The objective is complete by using shunt active power filter for elimination of current harmonics and improvement of power quality. Shunt active power filter is used to inject equal and opposite phase harmonic components with voltage source inverter topology and controlled by using PI controller with hysteresis controller and instantaneous power theory for reference current generation. Simulation is carried out based on instantaneous power theory with hysteresis control carried out on MATLAB as a result, it is noticed Active power filter reduces THD much better than Passive filter as per standards IEEE-519 for power quality.
