EFFECT OF ACIDIC AND BASIC STIMULATES OF ACTIVATED CARBON SYNTHESIZED FROM SCRAP RUBBER TIRES ON CONTINUOUS ADSORPTION PROCESS OF OIL FROM OIL-WATER EMULSION

Abstract
A continuous adsorption process have been used to characterize the effect of acidic and basic stimulates of activated carbon synthesized from Scrap rubber tires on oil removal from oil-water emulsion at different operating condition . the acidities and types of surface functional groups determine by Boehmís method .the gross acidic groups was 1.63, 2.50, 1.17 mmol/g for activated carbon before treatment, treatment with HNO3 and treatment with NaOH respectively. oil removal efficiency by using activation carbon with acidic treatments more than its by using activation carbon with basic treatments at optimum operating condition. the effects of PH, Temperature and flowrate on the oil removal efficiency have been studied . oil removal efficiency increase with increasing temperature and decrease with increasing flowrate, but the oil removal efficiency by acid -activated carbon more slightly deceased than its by basic -activated carbon with increasing flow rat and the oil removal efficiency by basic -activated carbon more slightly increased than its by acid -activated carbon with increasing temperature. the efficiency of oil removal by acid-activated carbon increases with increasing pH up to 9 than slightly deceased with rising the pH more than 9, while, the efficiency of oil removal by basic-activated carbon decreases with rising pH .
