CRITERIA FOR FATIGUE DESIGN OF STEEL STACKS: A CASE STUDY

Abstract
Vibrations from vortex-shedding occur at moderate wind speeds and thus stacks undergo a number of stress fluctuations. The criteria for fatigue is to be considered at the design stage. The I S Codes have not included the criteria for fatigue analysis. The risk of fatigue is to be considered in case of steel chimneys being subjected to high stresses. If the stack vibrates at a frequency of 1 Hz; its material is loaded and unloaded 3600 times in an hour, thus one full day of vibration would cause the stack to be loaded and unloaded 86000 times. If the fatigue life of such a structure is up to one million times, it may reach this point in a total period of 14 days. In the present paper, the risk of fatigue which has been addressed in Indian context by proposing a criteria. A case study from an industry is undertaken and the fatigue criteria has been applied to this stack. This design criteria is suitable for incorporation in Indian codes and standards. Measures to mitigate the fatigue problem have been proposed & suggested..
