Abstract
Background: Nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea are often seen in patients suffering from sinonasal masses. Unilateral nasal obstruction may be the result of a nasal mass that has neoplastic or inflammatory basis. The usual trend for a nasal mass is to be inflammatory in nature, inflammatory polyp for instance; however, neoplastic conditions can be seen and in particularly in association with unilateral presentation. Aim of the study: study was aiming at exploring the most common causes of unilateral nasal masses at that particular region of the country and identifying the trend of presentation and possible associated risk factors.
Patients and methods: The present prospective study enrolled 47, 29 men and 18 women with symptomatic unilateral nasal polyposis with an age range of 12 to 77 years. The study was carried out at Hilla General Teaching Hospital, Babel province, mid-Euphrates region of Iraq and the work with this study has extended from February 2018 to December 2019. All enrolled patients were subjected to routine ENT examination and office flexible endoscopy. All patients underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery and specimen was obtained and sent for purpose of histopathological diagnosis.
Results: The final pathological diagnosis is shown in table 2. Non-neoplastic conditions were the most common and included 17 (36.2 %) cases of chronic rhinosinusitis and 10 (21.3 %) cases of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis. Benign neoplastic conditions included 8 (17.0 %) cases of Inverted papilloma, 6 (12.8 %) cases of antrochoanal polyp and a single case (2.1 %) of cavernous haemangioma. Malignant neoplastic conditions included 2 (4.3 %) cases of squamous cell carcinoma, a single case (2.1 %) of adenocarcinoma and 2 (4.3 %) cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Key words: Neoplastic nasal polyps/masses were mostly encountered in patients over 60 years while inflammatory causes were seen in al age groups; however, they were more prominent at younger age group
