RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHERS’ EMOTIONAL LABOUR TECHNIQUES AND ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT. THE MEDIATING ROLE OF SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE

Abstract
This study examines the mediating effect of spiritual intelligence on the relationship between emotional labour techniques and organizational commitment. Based on affective event theory (AET), some factors within the workplace may pose psychological and physiological treats to service employees‟ wellness, and eventually, their organizational commitment. Nevertheless, individuals‟ spiritual inclinations often buffer these treats. Thus, using a list-based simple random sampling technique, this study adapted Emotional Labour Scale (ELS), Three-Components model (TCM), and Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24) to profile service employees, mainly teachers (n = 510) in the Klang Valley of Malaysia. Hypotheses were tested using SEM, through key GOF indices. Findings showed that both emotional labour techniques of surface acting and deep acting have negative relationship with organizational commitment. However, spiritual intelligence was found to be positive with both surface acting and deep acting techniques. Hence, it mediates a positive relationship between emotional labour techniques and organizational commitment. Goodness-of-Fit indices of the hypothesized structural model showed χ˛ / df ratio (1324.367 / 723) = 1.832, RMSEA (0.057), TLI (0.900), and CFI (0.904). This result provides empirical support for the data collected. The findings have several theoretical contributions to existing body of knowledge. The implications of the study to policy and practice are discussed accordingly. The study is limited by a number of factors. Hence, it highlighted potential areas for future research.
