BJP AND THE RISE OF HINDU NATIONALISM: AN IDEOLOGICAL DEBATE

Manasi Hajowary.

Abstract
The rise of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in Indian politics augmented the popularity of Hinduism in India. The
right-wing political party affiliated to the Rastriya Swayam sevak Sangh (RSS) or National Volunteer
Organisation endeavour the foundation of the glorious “Hindu Rastra”. Contradictory to the idea of Hindutva as
propounded by the RSS, secularism in India defines a wall of separation between religion and State. In India
secularism is equality and equal respect for all religion by pursuing non-discrimination against any individual
based on his/her religious belief. However, this has resulted in many contradictions in Indian social and political
life today. It is probable that the Mughals and British domination have generated frustration and fear to such an
extent that a religious nationalism (Hindutva) was born. This is exactly what Hindu Nationalism takes issue
with: the pseudo-secular project of building the national identity without Hindutva or against Hinduism.
Hindutva asserts that Hinduism is the basis of the Indian civilization. The Hindu-nessor Hindu identity is
perceived as the foundation of the nation.

Key words: BJP; Secularism; Hindu Nationalism; Hinduism; Hindutva; RSS.
