Abstract
The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on individuals’ mental health has not been sufficiently investigated. The aim of this research was to examine the relationship between coronavirus-related anxiety and optimism among university students in Jordan. The participants were 493 undergraduate students from the School of Educational Sciences at the University of Jordan. A coronavirus anxiety measure was developed to assess coronavirus-related anxiety, and an optimism measure was used to assess optimism levels. The results showed high coronavirus-related anxiety levels and moderate optimism levels. Coronavirus anxiety showed a significant negative correlation with optimism (r = −0.70; p < 0.05), with participants experiencing high coronavirus-anxiety levels exhibiting low optimism levels. Moreover, statistically significant gender-specific differences were observed, with females exhibiting higher anxiety levels than males.

Key words: Coronavirus, COVID-19, mental health, anxiety, optimism, Jordan
